According to data released by the National Organization for Civil Registration (NOCR), more than half of the population is above the age of 30 and 24.3% from among the total population of 80 million is over 51 years old.

People between the ages 31-50 constitute 30.9% of the population, while only 20% of people are younger than 20, the Persian-language newspaper ‘Donya-e Eqtesad’ reported.

The statistics bureau of the NOCR says decline in fertility rates is a major contributor to an aging population. Total fertility rate (TFR) should reach 2.1 per woman to make up for the significantly low rate in the past decades.

The population, family and school health office at the Health Ministry has announced that the average fertility rate recently increased to 2 children per women from 1.8 in 2011.
