During the Iranian month of Tir (June 22-July 22), cars and motorcycles were responsible for the most traffic accidents, according to the Traffic Control Police Chief Nader Rahmani.

“Nearly 55% of incidents in the month were caused by privately-owned cars and motorbikes were responsible for 32% of crashes,” he said, Rahvar120.ir reported.

Public transport vehicles had the smallest part in road mishaps with 0.9% of all incidents.

Iran has one of the highest rates of road fatalities in the world. Annually, over 20,000 people are killed and 800,000 are injured in road crashes.

However, the number of deaths from road accidents in the past ten years has dropped dramatically. Last year’s figure—15,932 deaths—represents a 42% decline compared to the calendar year 1385 (March 2006-07).
