Iranian pilgrims in Mecca and Medina in Saudia Arabia are in good health up to now, according to Pir Hossein Kolivand, the head of Emergency Medical Service.

Saudi media reported on Tuesday that more than 30 pilgrims had died in an accident in Mecca, but provided no details. Shortly after, rumors began circulating on social media that many were Iranian.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Kolivand said, “Iranian pilgrims have not been involved in any incidents and they’re all in good health,” Mehr News Agency reported.

He urged the public and media to ignore rumors and only cite reliable sources, namely the Iranian hajj authorities. Last year, Saudi authorities tightened security at pilgrimage sites following a deadly stampede that killed at least 4,700 pilgrims during the annual ritual in 2015. This year, 86,000 Iranians are performing the ritual, one of the five pillars of Islam which every able-bodied Muslim who can afford is obliged to undertake at least once in his/her lifetime.
