Iranians wanting to visit Iraq for Arbaeen will be able to submit their visa application next week, according to an official at Iran’s Hajj and Pilgrimage Organization.

“The registration of visa applicants planning to visit Iraq for Arbaeen will begin by the end of the current fiscal month (August 22),” Tabnak news website quoted Mohsen Nezafati as saying.

He said the pilgrims will have to submit an application through the designated online portal, www.samah.haj.ir.

“Iranians can obtain their visas as early as September 2,” Nezafati said.

More than 2 million Iranians traveled to Iraq last year for Arbaeen, a major Shiite occasion marking the 40th day of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS). Nezafati predicted that the number of Iranian visitors would reach 3 million this year.

Each year millions of Shiites from across the world converge on holy city of Karbala in Iraq – the site of the mausoleum of Imam Hussein (AS).
