Iran’s Society for Left-Handers has asked the Secretariat of the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution to recognize the International Lefthanders Day and include it on the  calendar. “This is because most of the everyday tools are designed for right-handers, such as chairs with desk arm,” Farzane Masoumian, the secretary of the society, said in a letter Thursday, AsrIran.com reported.

The United Nations designated August 13 as the International Left-Handers Day in 1976. It is meant to promote awareness of the inconveniences faced by left-handers in a predominantly right-handed world. No survey has ever been carried out to determine the number of left-handers in Iran. Globally, they make up 12% of the population.

A gathering, the first of its kind, is to be hold in Tehran’s Mellat Cinema Hall on August 13, Masoumian said.
