Around 180,000 households with women breadwinners are covered by the State Welfare Organization and benefit from services such as regular payments, medical services and assistance for job creation and home rental. Based on a 2016 census, up to 2,600 women are running households in the country, showing a 10% increase since 2011 when 2,500 women were household heads.

According to Habibollah Masoudi Farid, deputy for social affairs at the SWO, 5.5% of this population consists of women that never married.

“Around 71% of them are widows and between 10% and 11% are divorced,” he said, IRNA reported.

Also, about 10% to 11% have husbands who are hors de combat and disabled.

A group of these women are referred to as “woman breadwinners with a husband”.   They are those whose husbands have abandoned them, are in prison or are drug addicts.
