A new set of guidelines on genetic counseling is being prepared, according to an official at the State Welfare Organization. Around 30,000 Iranians are disabled every year. Underlying genetic problems is believed to be responsible for 40% of all disabilities in the country, Farid Barati Saddeh said. “To help address the problem, the labor and health ministries as well as the Plan and Budget Organization are preparing new regulations” that will help promote genetic counseling, he said. If approved by the government, genetic counseling will become mandatory before marriage, and priority will be given to couples who have disabled family members.
