Tests on the safety of the second phase of Tehran’s Metro Line 8 to Imam Khomeini International Airport have been successful and the line will become operational on Friday on the birth anniversary of Imam Reza (AS), the eighth Shia Imam, according to a Tehran Municipality official.

Maziar Hosseini, deputy for transportation and traffic affairs at the TM, said the trains has been tested with and without people on board and is now ready to carry passengers.

“Line 8 is the first express train in Tehran and is expected to cover the entire distance from Shahed to Parand Station in 34 minutes at a speed of 120 km per hour,” he said, ISNA reported.

Much of the line is however on the ground.

Line 8 of Tehran’s Metro has four stations including Shahed, Shahr-e Aftab (35 km south-west from Tehran), IKIA Station and Parand (35 km south-west from Tehran).

The first phase of the line from Shahed to Shahr-e Aftab was inaugurated in April 2016 to facilitate commute to the international exhibition center. The second phase connects Shahr-e Aftab to IKIA and it will further reach Parand Station in the third phase.
