Two-hundred motorcycle ambulances were unveiled on Monday in Tehran by Health Minister Seyyed Hassan Qazizadeh Hashemi.

“These will help reduce response time significantly,” the minister was quoted as saying by the local media.

Hashemi said his ministry has plans to add 500 more motorbike ambulances to the emergency vehicle fleet in other metropolises, including Isfahan, Shiraz, Mashhad, and Tabriz.

Health officials say in many districts in the expanding metropolises, ambulances are not able to reach patients fast enough due to the near permanent traffic congestion. The Health Ministry has long pushed for the addition of motorcycle ambulances to the emergency fleet in big cities. Mohammad Aqajani, deputy health minister, told IRNA that 60 ambulances were also added to Tehran’s fleet of emergency vehicles on Monday.
