The famous overpass in Gisha neighborhood in northwestern Tehran, widely referred to as Gisha Bridge, will be torn down before the year is out in March 2018.

According to Alireza Javid, a deputy at Tehran Municipality, the overpass is too old to be repaired and will be replaced by an underpass.

“The tunnel project is progressing well and is 35% complete,” he was quoted by Khabaronline.ir as saying.

Built half a century ago, the bridge is among the tallest metal bridges in the metropolis. With only two lanes and traffic moving in both directions, the narrow bridge forever in disrepair is almost always congested.

Once complete, the tunnel will stretch over 1.1 kilometers—around twice the length of the overpass.
