Most cancer patients rarely face the need to travel abroad for cancer diagnosis and treatment because Iranian hospitals are well equipped for the task, according to an otorhinolaryngologist (ear, nose and throat specialist).
According to Dr. Mahdi Khajavi, who is leading efforts to organize the3rd Seminar for Neck and Head Tumors (Aug 10-11 in Tehran), Iran has made major strides in the field, “so there is no need for patients to go overseas for treatment,” SNN.ir reported.
“While the diagnosis process varies from patient to patient, the treatment is similar: chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery.”
Khajavi, who is also a faculty member at Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Science, said all the equipment for chemo- and radiotherapy have been imported. To reduce unintended exposure of other organs to radiation, devices used in radiotherapy are advanced enough to aim high-energy rays at the tumor only.
“Specialists are available all over Iran, we only need to upgrade the equipment in the medical centers,” he said.
