Anti-narcotics police in Markazi Province in central Iran seized more than 1.5 tons of illegal drugs since the beginning of the current fiscal year in March, according to Colonel Ahmadreza Chegeni, the provincial police chief.

Speaking at a press conference in the provincial capital Arak, he said 1,541 kilograms of various types of narcotics were seized over the past four months, Fars News Agency reported. Tens of smugglers were arrested. Iran, which shares a 900-kilometer border with Afghanistan, has been used as the main conduit for smuggling illegal drugs from the war-torn neighboring country to kingpins and crime syndicates in Europe and beyond.
