An Iranian pharmaceutical company has managed to produce cabazitaxel, an effective yet expensive prostate cancer medicine.

Branded Cabotax, the drug has been developed by the Tehran-based Nano Alvand Pharmaceutical Company. The company says it developed the drug last year but can now mass produce it after obtaining approval from the Food and Drug Organization.

Cabazitaxel is an anti-cancer chemotherapy drug administered intravenously to patients suffering from castrate resistant metastatic prostate cancer.

“In 2014, people had to pay 100 million rials ($2,700) for the drug, which wasn’t covered by insurance policy,” Araz Sabzevari, a board member at the company, was quoted by Mehr News Agency as saying. He said Cabotax is priced at 40 million rials ($1,055).
