5,200 Suicide Attempts Prevented

Social Emergency Centers across the country provided free crisis intervention services to 5,225 people who tried to commit or were contemplating suicide in the last Iranian year (ended March 20, 2017), according to Hossein Asad Beygi, head of the Social Emergency Response Center at the State Welfare Organization.  Based on figures by the World Health Organization, there were an estimated 788,000 suicide deaths worldwide in 2015, or 10.7 per 100,000 population, ISNA reported. In Iran, the suicide rate has been hovering around 5.7 per 100,000 people in the last 15 years, which is much lower than the global average.
