At least 70,000 Iranians suffer from Multiplesclerosis (MS) as per official data, and around 2 million people around the world have MS, said Seyed Hossein Vaziri, head of Iran Multiple Sclerosis Society.

“Most of the people are diagnosed with the disease between the ages 20 to 40 and therefore it can negatively affect their education, job prospects and marriage. Early diagnosis is important as treatment can slow down its progress,” ISNA quoted him as saying.

The incidence of MS is rising in the Middle East but Iran is experiencing a faster growth rate than regional countries, according to the society.

The rate of MS incidence has risen from 27 per 100,000 people a few years ago to 115 to 120 per 100,000 people at present. Canada (291 per 100,000), Norway (160 per 100,000) and Sweden (189 per 100,000) have some of the highest prevalence rates in the world.
