An earthquake measuring 4.7 degrees on the Richter scale jolted Yasuj, the capital of the southwestern province of Kohgiluyeh-Boyer Ahmad, on Tuesday night. According to the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University, the tremor occurred 30 km from Yasuj city at 10:42 pm local time, and was registered at a depth of 10 km, IRNA reported. There were no reports of casualties and teams have been sent to the city to evaluate damage caused by the earthquake. According to the latest data, 200,000 people live in the city while the province has a population of 713,000. Iran sits astride several major seismic faults, and is prone to frequent earthquakes, many of which have been devastating.
