The incidence rate of hearing impairments and disorders in Iran is slightly higher than the global average, said secretary of the Iranian Association of Audiology. “The rate is 4-5 in every 1,000 people, while it is 1-2 worldwide,” said Hamid Jalilvand on the periphery of the 16th Iranian Congress of Audiology held May 9-11 at Tehran’s Olympic Hotel, Mehr News Agency reported. Noting that excessive use of audiovisual devices has lowered the bar for age-related hearing loss to below 40 years, he said other factors such as marriage within families and poor public health and awareness also contributes to the high rate. Some global studies say that 1 in 5 people has some form of hearing loss today – a rate about 30% higher than it was in the 1980s and 1990s – which many experts believe is due, in part, to the increased use of headphones.
