Rescue workers have retrieved bodies of seven more miners from under the rubble caused by a deadly explosion on May 3 in a coal mine in Azadshahr, in Iran’s northern Golestan Province. Reza Morovati, an official at the provincial Crisis Management Department told IRNA on Monday night that with this, the death toll of the Zemestanyurt coal mine blast has reached 42, much higher than the 35 estimated at the time of the incident.

The rubble removal operations and search continued to ensure there were no more bodies and wrapped up on Tuesday afternoon. On May 8, rescuers pulled out the bodies of 13 miners and earlier 22 from the debris. Over 80 people were injured in the blast.

The coal mine is situated 90 km from the provincial capital city of Gorgan. Three days of mourning for the victims was announced following the incident.
