Annually, between 5,000 and 6,000 people in the country lose their lives to liver diseases, said Dr. Seyyed Moayed Alavian, head of Iran Hepatitis Network (IHN) on Saturday. Speaking on the sidelines of a conference on hepatitis (inflammation of liver) in Chaharmahal-Bakhtiari Province, he said around 400,000 people in the country suffer from Hepatitis B, and 186,000 from Hepatitis C diseases, IRNA reported. “The prevalence rate of hepatitis B was 5% at one time, but has fallen to less than 2% across the country after implementation of the comprehensive vaccination programs for infants and high-risk groups since the year 1994,” he added.
