In a meeting between Syria’s Social Affairs and Labor Minister Rima al-Qadiri and Iran’s Vice-President for Women and Family Affairs Shahindokht Molaverdi, the two sides expressed hope that meetings focused on women’s issues would lead to solidarity and sustainable development in Islamic societies.
The meeting took place on Friday on the sidelines of the specialized summit of women affairs ministers from Islamic countries in Mashhad, Khorasan Razavi Province. It was part of the ‘Mashhad, 2017 Cultural Capital of the Islamic World’ international event.
Molaverdi noted that social policymaking for families in Islamic nations struggling with conflicts, violence and extremism such as in Syria, is facing impediments, and the victims are mostly women and children.
“Security is imperative for development. Resources that should be allocated for people’s empowerment are diverted for military spending and war, weakening the social and family foundations,” she stressed.
Al-Qadiri, for her part, described boosting ties with Iran, particularly in the field of women and family affairs, as a positive outcome of the meet.
“Such meetings will contribute to strategic ties between the two countries,” she added.
The Syrian minister called for sharing Iran’s experience on employment of women, with emphasis on those who are family caretakers.
Molaverdi also held separate talks with Afghan, Indonesian, Mauritanian and officials from other countries, IRNA reported.
The summit titled “Social and Family Policy Making in Islamic Societies; Requirements and Necessities” was attended by ministers of women’s affairs from Turkey, Indonesia, Azerbaijan, Mauritania, Afghanistan, Iraq, Bangladesh, Syria, Pakistan and Nigeria.
