An earthquake measuring 4.9 degrees on the Richter scale jolted the southern part of Chabahar County in Sistan-Baluchestan Province, early Friday. According to the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University, the tremor occurred 230 km from Chabahr city at 1:57 am local time and was registered at a depth of 10 kilometers in the Gulf of Oman, IRNA reported. There weren’t any aftershocks or reports of damages or casualties as the point of origin of the quake was far from the city. Chabahar is a free port on the Gulf of Oman coast. Earlier, Vahid Chegini, head of National Institute of Oceanography and Atmospheric Science said that earthquakes greater than 6.5 on the Richter scale (produced by the 900-kilometer Makran fault in Oman) can cause a tsunami.
