Those who are regular consumers of hookah (water pipe) are at higher risk of stroke than people who smoke cigarettes, said head of the 24th International Congress of Neurology and Clinical Electrophysiology.

“Stroke is the second leading cause of death, and the first cause of disability in the country,” said Babak Zamani at a press briefing on the upcoming event, iranneurology.com reported. While brain stroke fatalities have declined remarkably in advanced countries, the average age of brain stroke fatalities in Iran is still 10 years below global average.

The congress to be held May 2-5 at Tehran’s Olympic Hotel will present and discuss the latest medical achievements in the field, including medical and non-medical treatments for neurological conditions such as MS and stroke.
