Iranians donated over two million blood units over the past 11 months, said Dr Bashir Hajibeigi, spokesperson for the Iran Blood Transfusion Organization. “Tehran, Fars, and Khorasan Razavi provinces were the leading contributors,” he told Mehr News Agency. The overall rate of blood donation has increased by 1.8% compared with the corresponding period last year. The IBTO has also asked people on social and mass media to donate blood on Tuesday, when the traditional ritual of ‘Chaharshanbe Suri’ is observed ahead of the Persian New Year ‘Norouz.’

The ancient tradition has transformed over time from a simple bonfire to the use of firecrackers and explosive materials causing explosions and serious injuries, leaving hospitals and emergency centers in dire need of blood.
