One of the five electric bus routes planned for District 12 in Tehran has become operational and another will be ready by the end of the fiscal year on March 20, said Peyman Sanandaji, head of the Tehran Bus Company. “Developing electric bus routes across the capital city is a priority and more progress in this direction will be made in the upcoming year,” he told ILNA. Each electric bus costs 15-20 billion rials ($400,000-$530,000). Buses account for 23% of all transportation in the overcrowded metropolis and developing public transportation, particularly in the southern districts where it is a preferred means of commuting, is high on the agenda. Experts had said earlier that the city needs at least 10,000 buses for its daily commuting needs, while at present there are 7,000, of which a portion are off duty for repairs.
