3% Increase in MTP

Around 1,668 cases in the first ten months of the current year (ends March 20) were registered at the Tehran Province’s Central Forensic Medicine seeking permission for therapeutic abortion. Statistics indicate 3% increase in the rate compared to the same period last year, according to a report released by the organization. Permits for abortion were granted to 915 women. Legal permission for medical termination of pregnancy (MTP) is granted only on two grounds: fetal abnormality and existence of threat to mother’s life, IRNA reported. Valid genetic testing, ultrasound, written consent of mother, gestational period of less than 19 weeks of the fetus, besides approval by three medical specialists is mandatory for therapeutic abortion.
