The Iran Drug Control Headquarters will launch operations to round up homeless addicts and drug traders from the streets in 12 provinces for three months starting March 10. “Around 40,000 people from the target groups have been identified, and 25,000-30,000 of them will be rounded up in the first phase of the plan,” said Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli, interior minister and head of the IDCH, IRNA reported. The plan was first successfully piloted in Tehran Province. This year, 651 tons of illicit drugs were confiscated by IDCH teams, an increase of 15% vis-à-vis last year. Iran is the main transit route for drug trafficking from Afghanistan to kingpins in Europe.
