The head of the communicable diseases care center at the Health Ministry reiterated on Saturday that avian flu remains acute in 15 provinces of the country, warning people to practice caution while purchasing or using poultry and their products. “People must avoid free-range poultry or fresh farm eggs as the virus is still prevalent in the country, particularly among migrating or wild birds,” Mahmoud Soroush told IRNA. The Iranian Veterinary Organization has issued three important statements on the progress of the virus and how to take precautionary measures both by the people and poultry farm owners. “We are also asking everyone to stay clear of migrating birds, and report any cases of dead birds in one area,” Soroush stressed. H5N8, a dangerous strain of the bird or avian flu virus was reported in provinces of Markazi, Isfahan, Alborz, Qom, East Azarbaijan, West Azarbaijan, Kermanshah, Mazandaran, Golestan, Gilan, Lorestan, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari, and Tehran, forcing chicken farmers to cull thousands of infected birds.
