In the first 11 months of the current year that ends in March, Iran Police seized eight tons of illicit drugs in the southern Bushehr Province, said Arastu Torkaman, secretary of the Coordinating Council at Iran Drug Control Headquarters. “Police teams discovered and seized 8,300 kilograms of different kinds of traditional and industrial illicit drugs, including 28 million psychotropic pills in 545 operations,” IRNA quoted him as saying. Officials say the battle against drug addiction and trafficking costs the country $1 billion annually. Iran lies on the transit corridor between the world’s biggest opium producer Afghanistan and drug kingpins in Europe.
