A national study conducted recently suggested that fatty liver disease is more prevalent in the northern provinces of the country including Mazandaran, Golestan and North Khorasan.  “Eating a high-fat diet may result in fatty liver disease. The excess fat is stored in liver cells where it accumulates to form the disease,” said Dr. Amir Ali Sohrabpour, a researcher at Digestive Diseases Research Institute (DDRI) affiliated to Tehran University of Medical Sciences, IRNA reported.

“In the past two decades, the disease rate has increased and for every three people in the country one suffers from the disease,” he said.

Most of the people with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease can return to normal condition by changing their diet and lifestyle. Only 3% need medication and surgery.
