About 8% of all university students are regular smokers, said Dr Mojtaba Sedighi, head of the Student Affairs Organization at the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology.

He hoped that with the implementation of the anti-smoking program from September 2016 in universities nationwide would help reduce smoking among students, IRNA reported.

Under the program, students and university professors who want to quit smoking will relieve free psychological counseling as well as medical services.

A recent survey showed that only 10% of Iranian university students have never smoked. Around 65,000 people die of tobacco use in the country annually.
