During the first ten months of the current year that ends in March, anti-narcotics police managed to dismantle 26 drug smuggling bands in the northwestern Ardebil Province, said Colonel Mohammad Kheirkhah, provincial police chief. Over the period, 3,372 people involved in smuggling narcotics were arrested and handed over to the judicial authorities, Mehr News Agency quoted him as saying. Iran, which has a 900 km common border with Afghanistan, has been used as the main conduit for smuggling Afghan drugs to narcotics kingpins in Europe. Despite high economic and human costs, the Islamic Republic has been actively fighting drug trafficking over the past three decades.
