With an aim to improve the quality of psychiatric clinical care in the country, 1,000 new beds for psychiatric wards will be inaugurated today (January 14) across the country.  The inauguration ceremony will be held at Golestan Hospital, Ahvaz, in the southwestern Khuzestan Province in the presence of Health Minister Hassan Ghazizadeh Hashemi, IRNA reported.  Currently, there are 9,527 psychiatric beds in the country, 7,566 beds at state-run hospitals and 1,961 in private hospitals, according to a report released by behdasht.gov.ir.

The latest figures say that 1% of the population or around 800,000 people suffer from severe mental disorders like different types of schizophrenia, but only quarter among them refer to psychiatrists.  “Untreated mental illness can cause severe family conflicts, aggravating social problems,” Hashemi said.

In total, there are 120,000 hospital beds in the country, at both the 550 state-run and 350 private hospitals.
