Air pollution is associated with a 35% increased risk of stroke, said Dr. Amir Hejazi, scientific secretary of the 9th International Congress on Stroke, and urged for enhancing people’s awareness on stroke and ways to decrease the risks. The latest achievements and scientific findings in the field of stroke treatment and care will be discussed at the congress due to be held March 2-4 at Iran’s National Library building, IRNA reported.  A total of 600-800 national specialists, physicians and medical students as well as specialists from the US, India, Turkey, UK, and Germany will attend the confab. Ten years ago, stroke was the third leading cause of death in the world. However, the World Health Organization has warned that it can turn into the second leading cause of death if countries don’t take preventive measures. Hejazi added that air pollution, obesity, smoking, and diabetes are the main risk factors for stroke.
