Anti-narcotics police forces seized more than 2.5 tons of illicit drugs in an operation in the southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchestan. Last week, specialized police forces in Nikshahr city received information about an armed drug gang that was planning to transport a huge consignment of illicit drugs, said provincial police chief, General Hossein Rahimi on Friday. In the overnight operation on Thursday, police forces managed to identify the vehicles used for transporting the drugs and gave chase. A gun battle broke out after the smugglers refused to stop their vehicles, Rahimi said, adding that the traffickers fled under the cover of darkness leaving their vehicles behind. Police seized 2,431 kg of opium. Iran, which has a 900 km common border with Afghanistan, has been used as the main conduit for smuggling Afghan drugs to narcotics kingpins in Europe.
