The Education Ministry is planning to increase fluoride therapy coverage in primary schools to ensure better oral health for students in later years.

“In cooperation with the Health Ministry, we’re trying to raise the current 85% coverage in schools to 95%,” said Mehrzad Hamidi, physical education and health deputy at the Education Ministry.

The number of DMFT (decayed, missing, or filled teeth) is five in children with primary (milk) teeth, while it is 2.9 in children under 12.

“We are trying to reduce the number of DMFT before students finish primary schools,” Hamidi said, adding that 6.5 million out of the 7.5 million students were covered under the fluoride therapy programs in schools during the past academic year.
