More than 90% of all deaths in the country occur due to non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Cardiovascular diseases (46%), cancer (13%), and diabetes (2%), are the top three NCDs that have contributed significantly to the country’s premature mortality rate, said Ahmad Kousha, head of the NCDs Office at the Health Ministry. Speaking in East Azarbaijan Province last week, he said global studies suggest that between 2 and 10% of the population in every country are living with diabetes. The figure is about 5-6% in Iran, as currently more than 4.5 million Iranians are diabetic, salamatnews.com reported.
