No cases of cholera have been reported among pilgrims visiting the holy city of Karbala in Iraq to partake in Arba’een mourning rituals. The annual event this year which falls on November 20 marks the 40th day of Ashura, the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS), the third Imam of Shia Muslims and the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). “No instance of cholera has been detected among Iranian or foreign pilgrims, and our teams are continuously monitoring the health status of travelers,” said Pirhossein Kolivand, head of the Health Ministry’s health and hygiene committee for Arba’een rituals.

However, pilgrims must maintain good personal hygiene and avoid eating unhygienic or unpackaged food, he cautioned, ISNA reported. “Medical teams have been stationed all along the Iran-Iraq border and across Karbala to ensure quick and easy access to health services,” Kolivand added.
