Researchers at Iran Chemistry and Chemistry Engineering Research Center have produced a domestic type of an anti-cancer drug.

The chemotherapy drug named  ‘carboplatin’ is used against some forms of cancer, mainly ovarian carcinoma, lung, head and neck cancers as well as endometrial, esophageal, bladder, breast and cervical, central nervous system or germ cell tumors. It also has use in the preparatory stage of stem cell or bone marrow transplants.

“The aim of the project was to achieve the production knowhow and decrease the expense of chemotherapy for cancer,” said project manager and board member of ICCERC Dr Mahboubeh Eslami Moqaddam, IRNA reported.

The locally produced drug, which was one year in the making, is priced a third of its foreign equivalent that costs about 600,000 rials ($17) per 50mg vial.
