Girl Dies After Pesticide Used to Kill Lice

A seven-year old girl from a village in Babol County, Mazandaran Province, who was poisoned due to the use of crop pesticide on her scalp by her mother to remove lice, died on Monday despite efforts of the medical team to save her. The girl was admitted to hospital on Friday after slipping into a coma along with her brother whose is said to be improving, IRNA reported. “The public health and sanitation department of Babol University of Medical Sciences distributes lice killing shampoo for free,” said public relations manager of the university Aref Hashemi.

The prevalence rate of lice is 5% in the county, where 74,000 students study in about 500 schools.  World over, various centers for disease control and prevention, continue to warn parents against the use of toxic chemicals to get rid of head lice.
