The rate of c-section in hospitals under universities of medical sciences across the country has decreased by 11% over the past year, said Health Minister Hassan Qazizadeh Hashemi.

“Currently, the average rate of c-section in the country is just over 40%, and as low as 20% in certain hospitals,” he said Tuesday during an inauguration ceremony for a hospital delivery ward in Fasa city, Fars Province, IRNA reported.

Under the 2014 Health Reform Plan, the healthcare system has managed to significantly reduce the rate of c-section operations and encourage natural childbirth. By the end of the current administration’s term in mid-2017, a total of 1,600 natural child delivery wards will be inaugurated.

“We need to reach our average target rate of 30% within a 10-year period,” Hashemi noted.
