Despite intensified efforts to eradicate Leishmaniasis in Fars, there are still 6,000 people suffering from the disease in the province, said Hossein Faramarzi, head of Communicable Diseases Control Office, at Shiraz University of Medical Sciences (SUMS). “Drought and climate change have resulted in the rising number of sand flies which spread the disease,” IRNA quoted him as saying. “At present, parasitologists in state-run health centers provide treatment to patients as determined by the type of infection.”  In January 2015, Health Minister Hassan Ghazizadeh Hashemi announced prevention plans to contain Leishmaniasis, on the recommendation of the Chancellor of SUMS. Leishmaniasis is a skin disease caused by parasites of the genus Leishmania. It can be partly prevented by spraying insecticides and treating people with the disease early to prevent further spread. Early symptoms include skin sores which erupt weeks after infection.
