The number of mobile HIV/AIDS test centers has increased to three as of October and are operating in west, east, and central Tehran daily until 6 pm. The program was first launched by the NGO ‘Mobile Messengers’ with one bus last year in the western areas of Tehran in cooperation with the Health Ministry and Tehran Municipality. “The reception has been great in western Tehran,” said Mohammadreza Qasemi, managing director of the NGO. The test offered at the mobile centers is of the basic kind (known as rapid tests) that determines if a person has symptoms of HIV infection within 10 minutes. Those tested positive are referred to medical centers for a more thorough test. As of this year, nearly 32,000 people infected with HIV were identified in the country. It is estimated that half of those infected are not aware of their status.
