Currently, 4.2-4.4 % of children under the age of five in the country suffer from marasmus, a form of severe malnutrition characterized by energy deficiency.  “The figure has been reduced significantly during the last three decades,” said Aliakbar Sayyari, deputy minister of health, on Tuesday.

Also, around 14% of pregnant women suffer from iron deficiency which can lead to low birth weight in babies, he said, IRNA reported.

“We are cooperating with Alavi Charity Foundation to provide healthy nutrition to underprivileged pregnant women in 7 provinces,” he added.  The charity is affiliated to the Mostazafan Foundation (the second-largest commercial enterprise in Iran and the biggest holding company in the Middle East), which is an economic, cultural, and social welfare institution, whose profits are used to promote the living standards of the disabled and poor.
