According to the latest figures released by the Statistical Center of Iran (SCI), 33% of the people in the marriageable age have never been married, while 67% have been married at least once. From among the 196,592 marriages registered last year that ended in March, in 17,441 (8.8%) of the marriages one partner was younger than 20 years of age, Alef News Agency reported. The average age at first marriage was 23 years and 27.5 years for women and men, respectively. There are 11 million people over the age of 20 in the country who are eligible for marriage, but experts say the institution of marriage is “crisis-ridden.” There is one divorce for every five marriages in Iran.
