About 5-6 million people living with diabetes in the country are not aware of their status, said the scientific secretary of the 11th International Congress of Endocrine Disorders.

“Diabetes has increased in the Iranian community due to unhealthy lifestyles, but some 4-5 million are not aware that they have the condition to control it in the early stages,” said Hossein Delshad at a press conference, Mehr News Agency reported.

There are an estimated 4.6 million people with diabetes in Iran, which is 8.5% of the population. The World Health Organization estimates that by 2040 there will be twice as many people with diabetes in Iran as there are today: a potential 9.2 million.The congress  is scheduled to be held November 2-4 at Tehran’s Shahid Beheshti University.
