Iran’s food waste equals that of food waste in 10 European countries, said secretary of Iran Urban Economics Scientific Association (IUESA).

“Food waste, especially in the urban capitals, is inordinately high and it goes against the principles of the Resistance Economy and Sustainable Development Goals,” said Seyyed Mohsen Tabatabaei, Mehr News Agency reported.

Resistance Economy is a set of policies outlined by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei to boost domestic production and wean the country off oil revenues. Tabatabaei lamented the lack of systematic practices to manage consumption and underscored the need to change consumption patterns. Food waste in Iran is about 35 million tons annually. Globally, about 870 million people do not have enough food to eat. Nutritional deficiency results in the death of 2.6 million children under 5 years, which equals to one-third of the world child population, Tabatabaei noted.
