All GM food products in the domestic market have been tested and approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and although genetically modified foods cause no known health problems, all the products are labeled, said Dr. Mahnaz Kheyrandish, secretary of Bio-Safety Committee at the Health Ministry. “The safety of GM products has been evaluated by EFSA (European Food Safety Authority), which is responsible to independently assess any possible risks of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) to human and animal health and the environment,” IRNA quoted her as saying. At present, over 90% of soy (soya bean) in the world is genetically modified. Iran is one of the largest producers of soybeans in the Middle East. Soybeans are grown primarily as a source of edible vegetable oil.
