Over 26 tons of illicit drugs were seized recently in four provinces of Sistan-Baluchestan, Kerman, Fars and Hormozgan. About 92% (24 tons) of the haul was opium, said Asadollah Hadinejad, deputy head of Iran’s Anti-Drug Headquarters. “In the past two weeks, 1,153 kg marijuana, 562 kg morphine, 378 kg heroin, and 30 kg crystal meth were also seized in the four provinces,” ISNA quoted him as saying. Iran, which shares a 900 km common border with Afghanistan, is often used as the main conduit for smuggling drugs from the neighboring war-ravaged country to markets in Europe and beyond.
