Over 500 kg of narcotics were seized in an armed raid on the country’s southern border in Saravan, Sistan-Baluchestan Province. “Smugglers were attempting to transport the illegal drugs on a herd of cattle and tried to escape before they were trapped and arrested by the provincial border police,” said border police commander Brigadier General Roham-Bakhsh Habibi. Iran, which has a 900 km border with Afghanistan, is seen as the main conduit for smuggling drugs from the war-ravaged neighboring country to Europe and beyond. Earlier, two tons of narcotics were seized in the central province of Isfahan during the Iranian New Year holidays (March 19-April 1).
