Over 30 tons of different types of illicit drugs were seized in Yazd Province in the past 11 months, showing a 54% increase in drugs seized over the same period in the previous year, said Brigadier General Iraj Kakavand, police chief of the central province.

The raid included two tons of heroin, over four tons of hashish, and more than 24 tons of opium, Alef News Agency reported.

Provincial police forces also disbanded 41 drug trafficking rings and confiscated 378 light and heavy vehicles used for the transporting the contraband, he added.

Iran, which shares a 900-kilometer common border with Afghanistan, is often used as the main conduit for smuggling drugs from the neighboring war-ravaged country to markets in Europe and beyond.
